In the past 40 years as an athlete and coach I’ve been lucky enough to be around a lot of champions. Some I’ve trained, some I’ve trained with, and others I’ve observed and just know really well. For example, three good friends and teammates from college each won their respective race at the 1984 Olympic Track Trials. Paul Cummings (we’d run over 120 miles a week together) in the 10,000 meters, Doug Padilla (a roommate and excellent cook!) in the 5,000 meters, and Henry Marsh (a four-time Olympian) in my event the 3,000 meter steeplechase. They not only possessed the tangible raw physical talent, but were also “mentally healthy” and I choose that term specifically over “mentally tough” or “mentally tenacious”—which they most certainly were, but most champions I know are “mentally healthy” and let me explain.
That very, very small percentage of athletes that win the state or NCAA championship or go on to Olympic fame usually has it together mentally—where it matters most. They may have a bad experience in their event but they always overcome it and move on—and they’ve usually figured out how to do this on their own. That’s what I call being mentally healthy. My son Bear is like this. The other kind of athlete—perhaps with the same talent—could have the same negative experience but he internalizes the experience, dwells on it, and doesn’t really know how or has developed the capacity to let it go. The negative experience sticks with him to some degree or another and affects all future performances whether he knows it or not. And that’s the opposite of being mentally healthy. In the past when I was coaching athletes that had a ton of talent but didn’t know how to deal correctly with negative experiences—talk about frustration—sometimes I could show them a few techniques to overcome their own obstacles, but it was inconsistent and didn’t work for every athlete—until I discovered EFT (tapping) and created Performance Energy Tapping. Now I have a 100% success rate with any athlete in any sport with any problem. It truly has been a career saver for a lot of athletes I’ve worked with.
Take Cody for example. A few weeks ago Cody came to one of my No Limit Workshop for swimmers. Cody hit my workshop at the right time. He was just about to go into his two biggest meets of the season, region and state. Unfortunately, ever since the beginning of the season he developed a habit of getting so nervous and anxious that he became nauseous and would throw up before each meet and even during some of the races. It was embarrassing to say the least and it robbed him of needed fuel to compete well. He had tried everything to get over it but nothing helped…until he met me. After a couple of sessions of about a half hour apiece, his feeling of dread and pressure were gone and replaced with my trademark Unshakable Confidence. He went out a couple of days later with no hint of anxiety turning to nausea and set personal records in both his events. He even called me while he was still at the meet with one more relay still to swim to tell me how great it felt. Cody is typical of the athletes I work with, they know they could do better and reach their potential if they could just get over what was blocking them. It works and it works every time.
Now Cody will be able to look back on those races with pride instead of regret and bewilderment. And he will be able to draw on this experience as a resource state in the future instead of a disappointment.
If you know of any athlete that has talent up the wahzoo, but they just aren’t reaching their potential because they aren’t “mentally healthy”, point them my way and let’s put them back on the path to achievement that they deserve to be on.
